This Year,

RAMSMUN

Will Provide

A Newbie UNEP Committee

We get it...

The first MUN conference someone does is utterly confusing. The question 'what do I do' plagues their minds for a significant majority of the conference, and just when they seem to be getting the hang of one thing...it's time to do another. It's even worse for younger delegates, who may be overshadowed by older, more experienced delegates. RAMSMUN will be introducing an innovative and fun guided simulation for those not yet ready to participate in a proper MUN committee, teeming with power-hungry delegates. As an introductory General Assembly (Crisis Newbie Committees are not available at this time), this Newbie Committee will provide first-time delegates with a taste of MUN through 'suggestions' from the dais and one-on-one helpers! A separate delegate handbook will be provided for this committee - containing extra helper notes and all.

How it Works

This guided simulation will require no prior research, nor will it require any inkling of the workings of MUN. Rather, delegates will walk into their committee room, dressed their very best, and randomly choose the country they will be representing. Printed fact sheets, with individual country information and international information, will have been prepared before the start of the committee by the secretariat for each of the attending delegates. The first topic for the simulation will be Climate Change, which is a relevant world issue, but also one on which all delegates will have plenty of knowledge already. This will allow them to have a foundation off which to build off and make connections, adding a layer of depth to the points they mention in committee.

As they enter the committee, they will be given a few minutes to look over their respective fact sheets, serving as their 'research'. During this time, the chair will give a 10-minute crash course on MUN and Parliamentary Procedure which will include:

  • What MUN is (an opportunity to build PoG skills by mimicking UN delegates)
  • Present/Present&Voting
  • Raising Placards
  • Motions and Points
  • How to Give Speeches (3rd person, Country POV)
  • Simple vs. Significant Majority

With this information shared, the chair will 'suggest' for a delegate to raise their placard and open debate, and then the speakers' list. These 'suggestions' will be the foundation of the guided part of the simulation, be they for motions, blocs, or resolutions. The chair will explain that if one is on the speakers' list, they simply give a short speech explaining what their country believes. As the simulation progresses, the chair will continue to introduce new MUN information such as:

  • Moderated Caucuses
  • Unmoderated Caucuses
  • Round Robins
  • Blocs
  • Working Papers

We understand that this could be quite overwhelming, which leads to the second part of the guided simulation. Experienced delegates will be present in the committee, to provide one-on-one help, which the chair is unable to do. If a delegate is unsure about even the tiniest of things, have no doubt, a helper will be there ASAP!
